Yesterday we arrived at Bad Waldsee Stellplatz. This is based outside of a large camp site. Steven used the wifi for a little work and Jane used the launderette to catch up on our washing.

But the highlight of this stop over is the nearby Neuschwanstein Castle. This is probably the best “Fairy tale” German castle we have seen. If you don’t know what it looks like then you may have seen it in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Only the airbourne exteriors were used in the film which you can see in the YouTube clip below.

Built for King Ludwig II, work started on Neuschwanstein Castle in 1869 and stopped in 1892 upon the death of the king, thus it remains unfinished. It was designed by a theater set designer and then passed to an architect to make the building work which is why is looks so theatrical and was also the inspiration for the castle in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.

The result is a magnificent palace and castle built high on a rocky outcrop which can be seen for miles around.

Upon arriving at the castle at 10am the queue for tickets was already considerable and next entry time was 15.00 so we decided to skip the queue and walk 30mins up the hill side to the front courtyard of the castle which was free to enter.
